Many people are trying to lose weight for both health and fitness reasons. Below are 12 perfect suggestions to help you get rid of the extra fat. You should pick the ones you feel are easiest for you.
Go for a healthy lifestyle
One or some positive changes in your daily habits can have a significant impact on your health. Moreover, they are even more effective than dieting or exercising for weight loss. According to Marisa Lippert – author of The Cheater's Diet: The Sneaky Secrets to Losing Up to 20 Pounds in 8 Weeks Eating (and Drinking) Everything You Love, habit changes help you lose weight faster than you think.
We talked to some of our readers who have lost from 2 to 10kg to discover their “secrets” to effective weight loss. Here they are.
Change your meals
“I used to eat out 6 times per week. I tried cutting down to once every week and picking dishes with lots of green vegetables instead of fatty ones. I also limited my carbohydrate intake. I used to eat 2-3 bowls of rice. Now, I’m down to 1 bowl/meal and I increase my intake of vegetables and protein as well. As a result, I got rid of 2kg just within 1 month,” said Mr. Truong Minh who lives in District 3, HCMC.
Eat less salt
Ms. Minh Thao, an office worker in District 1, HCMC shared her experience: “I reached my weight loss goal after I stopped munching on snacks and other salty foods. If I want to buy a candy bar or some potato chips, I have to walk a long distance to the store. This inconvenience has helped me tame my cravings.”
Never skip breakfast
“I used to skip breakfast a lot, but I no longer do that. I always consume around 300 calories for a meal, protein and cereals included. My typical breakfast involves a slice of bread with some natural peanut butter or apple butter. Then, I have lighter foods throughout the day. I lost 10kg in a year by maintaining that diet”. That’s an impressive weight loss record set by Ms. Huynh Ngoc Hoa, Hanoi.
“I try to do some gentle exercises anytime I can. It may be some dancing while I clean my dishes or other exercises while I’m lying down and watching TV. This helps my body burn calories and keeps me from stuffing my mouth with snacks in front of my TV. Now, my body is more toned and I can wear clothes in a smaller size”. That’s the journey to weight loss of Ms. Tran Thi My Hanh, 35 years old.
Wean off stimulants
This is the weight loss secret of Mr. Nguyen Quang Nam, a 40-year-old man living in Hai Phong. He shared: “I quit smoking and tried to hit the gym to start working out with a personal trainer. There’s no way I could focus on exercising and getting healthier if I just kept smoking. I lost 5kg in 3 months.”
Change how you buy food
“When sorting out the food in my house, I intentionally changed high-calorie foods with lower-calorie alternatives such as nuts or cereals.” Ms. Yen Nhi (30 years old) believes that’s how she got thinner.
Create a “happy hour”
“After work, my co-workers and I used to eat fast food for dinner. After that, I changed everything. Instead of eating fatty foods late, I switched to vegetables and fruits, then taking a walk or a run around the neighborhood. One year later, I lost 12kg”, said Mr. Nguyen Phuc Quang.
Stock up vegetable
“I’ve been adding vegetables to my favorite foods such as pizzas or fried chickens and prioritize vegetables while eating. As a result, I’m always full before getting to any calorie-packed foods such as potato fries. Thanks to this, my clothes are 4 sizes smaller now,” revealed Mr. Hieu Nghia.
Take up running
Ms. Quynh Nhu, a 28-year-old, said that when she wanted to wear her skinny jeans again, she started running for 20 minutes every day during her lunch break. In 2 months, she reached her weight loss goal - 4kg down.
Ms. Khanh Linh, head of a marketing department in District 5, HCMC, shared: “After every meal, I used to have some ice-cream, whole milk, or boba tea as desserts. Now, I replaced those with sugar-free yogurt or a few slices of low sugar fruits such as mangos and guavas, etc. That’s how I lost 6 kg in 6 months”.
Join a new recreational course
“2 months ago, I started going to a Zumba class twice per week. This passionate dance has helped tone my muscles, particularly those in my legs and arms. Moreover, Zumba also gives me a healthy heart. After that, I lost around 5kg and almost got to my ideal weight goal.” That’s Ms. Diem My’s weight loss experience.
Stop eating at night
“I used to eat late at night due to habits. I’d get bored if I didn’t. I’ve stopped eating after 6 pm for half a year. I allow myself to eat vegetables, soup, and meat before 6 pm, but only in moderation and no carbohydrates. Maintaining that for half a year and I’ve gotten rid of 8kg. Many people think that’s not a lot. However, diet regimes or pills which give you diarrhea just cause temporary water loss. It’s not safe and your weight will come back soon. Safe weight loss means losing weight gradually and maintaining your current weight.” Ms. Hoa, a 37-year-old living in Da Nang, spilled her heart.
